Chris, a local artist whose bedroom is barely visible from beneath a makeshift tarpaulin cover, points out where the roof collapsed into his bed. He tells us that when the earthquake struck, the deafening roar sent him “running for the doorway” as the first of bricks began to tumble from the ceiling. He turned in time to see his flatmate’s bedroom wall and part of the roof cave into the bed where he had been only seconds earlier.

ADRA commits $10,000

Presence at the daily group controllers’ coordination meeting at Environment Canterbury has helped ADRA to identify challenges and potential gaps that can be addressed as the city moves from a rapid response to recovery phase. The meetings, which provide a forum for members of the emergency and other key services to report on their respective situations, have identified welfare as the top priority.
