ADRA NZ on the ground in Samoa

ADRA New Zealand’s International Programmes Director Mr. Dayan Eager, has arrived in Samoa to observe at first- hand the devastation caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami and to report and assess the action to be taken to relieve the suffering of the local people and to assist with the rebuilding of damaged communities. Through him, ADRA has also been able to send much-needed emergency shelter supplies. It is apparent that the situation is both widespread and tragic, with many lives lost and infrastructure destroyed.

“It is very sad to see the destruction here. The tsunami has destroyed cars, trees, buildings and, unfortunately, taken the lives of many people,” he said. “When the warnings were sounded, the residents ran for higher ground, leaving everything behind. On their return, they found their houses destroyed, communications cut and no electricity. These people most certainly need our ongoing prayers. And ADRA is working to help them recover from this terrible tragedy.”

The most affected areas are in the exposed southeastern tip of the island with a confirmed loss of life now totaling 120 and thousands of people without shelter and in need of welfare. Damage is reported as far inland as 1.6km and the death toll is unfortunately expected to rise.

Adventist Churches in Samoa have begun donating food items for distribution and it would appear that shelter, water and sanitation issues will be of the highest priority. It is expected that the Seventh-day Adventist Church network will be working to maximum capacity to meet this commitment. ADRA will work with the Adventist Church and other local groups to support affected communities.

ADRA along with other aid agencies have been gathering information about the needs of communities and are working with the local Disaster Management Council to implement a coordinated response . During times of stress and emergency such as this, it’s crucial for all responding organisations to work together so as to meet all needs.

Reports will continue to be posted as information comes to hand.

ADRA NZ is still in need of funding to help efforts of supplying much needed emergency supplies. To donate click here or donate via our call centre 0800 4 999 111.
