Cook Islands – Cyclone Pat

In the early hours of the morning of 10 February Tropical Cyclone Pat hit the Southern Cook Islands, with Aitutaki Island being seriously hit. At the height of the cyclone there were destructive wind gusts of up to 185 km/hr. Of the 711 houses on the island, 85% are severely damaged. There is an urgent need for fresh water, food supplies and general household items such as sleeping gear.

ADRA New Zealand’s Cook Islands partner, the SDA Mission, moved quickly to establish contact with Emergency Management Cook Islands to identify what the immediate needs are. Initial assessments have shown that provision of goods that will assist with temporary shelter and provision of water supply are a priority. Planning and preparations are underway to meet these urgent needs.
