In New Zealand, we consider literacy and numeracy as essential skills for survival in society and requisite tools for employment. In Bangladesh, however, education is not freely available to those who are trapped in poverty – women and young girls are particularly prone to be disadvantaged. This makes it very difficult to escape from the cycle of poverty, to find permanent employment, or overcome the effects of malnutrition and illness.
ADRA NZ’s Homesite Resource Development Project (HRDP) is a series of literacy awareness projects that is designed to change attitudes towards learning, especially amongst women, to improve health and nutrition and achieve a reasonable degree of self-reliance within the more disadvantaged regions of the country.
Under the auspices of this programme, more than 1200 women are attending
Literacy classes which are run in conjunction with health sessions that address the vital issues of food shortages and nutrition. There are clear signs that the skills, which have been taught in these sessions, have filtered into the community at large and there is now a growing recognition of the importance of education and the role of women in society.
