On December 16 tropical storm Washi (local name Sendong) made landfall in the eastern parts of Mindanao. It slowly travelled westward and caused heavy rainfall during the night, more than 200mm (8 inches) in less than 24 hours, that caused severe flashfloods and landslides, especially in Region X on December 17. The cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan were the hardest hit.

The rescue operations are still ongoing and so far more than 650 people have died – among them many children. It is feared that the death toll will rise to more than double since many are still missing.

ADRA Philippines is launching a response in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on December 19 with mainly food items to a total value of US$40,000.

ADRA Philippine’s national partner, Adventist Community Service (ACS), is already distributing relief goods to a value of approximately US$10,000.
