Cyclone Pam caused serious damage to the infrastructure of homes, schools and other community facilities, affecting around 166,000 people on 22 islands in Vanuatu. Evacuation centres were lacking in providing the adequate number of facilities. Many didn’t have electricity, some didn’t have plumbed water. In some cases people were moved to evacuation centres only to be removed during the cyclone because they were starting to fall apart. The Lape Community is in need of equipping their evacuation centre with disaster response facilities. This means constructing a 22,500L water tank, a water catchment, a solar light system, and two latrines. These new improvements will allow the evacuation centre to have immediate access to clean water, safe water and toilets for the Lape community and the surrounding areas who may need to seek shelter during a disaster.
